This project examines the adequacy of the Gricean programme in the philosophy of language and cognitive science and develops an alternative, Austinian framework grounded in the idea that language use is a social practice consisting in the performance of conventional speech acts—acts done in conformity with a convention. It elaborates and systematizes Austinian ideas from the philosophical literature to account for (i) the variety and constitution of linguistic meaning, (ii) the structure and content of communicative acts, (iii) the mechanisms and cognitive underpinnings of verbal communication, and (iv) the evolutionary and developmental emergence of linguistic and communicative capacities. The project also applies this framework to account for discursive phenomena such as accommodation, presupposition, irony, presumption, and demonstrative reference, as well as to the evolutionary emergence of illocutionary interaction.
